Timber & Stone at Northgate
A mountain modern custom residence rising on a ridge in Promontory's Northgate Canyon — Park City, Utah. Designed by Inouye Design. Built by Roots Builders.
Where craftsmanship meets the landscape
Tucked into a 1.18-acre ridge homesite in Promontory's Northgate Canyon, Timber & Stone is a mountain modern retreat conceived to live in quiet conversation with its surroundings.
The home pairs heavy timber, Browns Canyon stone, and zinc detailing with walls of glass that frame canyon and mountain views. Across two levels and 7,496 square feet, the residence balances intimate, family-focused spaces with generous areas for entertaining — every room oriented to make the most of the site's exposure and its preserved native scrub oak.
Honest materials, deep covered decks that pull living outdoors, and a walk-out terrace level built for gathering. This is a Roots Builders custom residence in the truest sense. It's a singular home designed and built for the way a family actually lives in the mountains.
"Heavy timber and hand-laid stone, walls of glass to the canyon — a home that belongs to its ridge."

Mountain Modern Architecture and Site Strategy
Designed by Inouye Design, this timber stone home uses a two-level configuration that follows the natural slope of the site.
The main living level sits along the ridge line, while the terrace level steps into the hillside. This approach reduces visual impact and supports efficient structural design.
Orientation was carefully set to maximize solar exposure in the winter months while maintaining privacy from neighboring properties. Large glazing elements frame the canyon while preserving comfort and efficiency.
Foundations were designed for slope stability, lateral loads, and soil conditions before excavation began.
Exterior material placement follows a clear hierarchy:
Stone grounds the base and connects the home to the site. Timber defines structure and rhythm. Cedar siding softens upper massing. Zinc protects the most exposed surfaces. Each decision reflects both design intent and construction durability.
Two levels, designed to flow

More than its size and materials
A true ridge homesite
Perched on 1.18 acres at 6,745 feet, the home is oriented so nearly every primary space — and the entire walk-out terrace — opens to canyon and mountain views.
Heavy timber, honestly expressed
Structural timber members up to 14"×26" are left to read as architecture, paired with hand-laid Browns Canyon stone and zinc for a palette that ages beautifully.
Two homes in one rhythm
A refined main level for everyday living sits above a terrace level engineered purely for fun — gym, media, games, wine, and four guest suites for a full house.
Indoor-outdoor by design
2,925 square feet of covered decks and patios, a great-room fire feature, and preserved native scrub oak blur the line between the architecture and the land.
Intended Use
